Know nature. Your first decision is what type of wood you need. There are two types – hardwood and softwood. Hardwoods come from leaf-producing trees like oak, maple, elm, or ash tree. And like their name, they are hard in texture and feel. Hardwoods are great flooring and custom furniture such as custom live edge dining tables.
Softwoods have more give and are from cone-producing trees like common pine, fir, spruce, cedar, and cypress trees. Knowing which to choose when will save you time and money.
Pick for the project. The type of wood you choose will depend on what you are building. Construction projects that include the interior structure of home-like walls, floors, and ceilings require the use of hardwoods. These woods have the strength and durability to handle the pressure. They are also often used to make furniture, especially pieces you want to last a long time.
Softwoods work well for interior projects that are less weight-bearing like doors, window frames, and cabinetry. Because of their low maintenance, and insect and wood rot repellent qualities, softwoods are also a wise choice for outdoor projects like decks and fencing.

It is also a strong and stable alternative for various home projects. The use of plywood can be a little more complicated because of its different types and grades so be sure to check the quality before starting.
