Not everyone is an expert in construction or experienced in what it takes to complete home improvement jobs. But we do appreciate those that like to take projects into their own hands.

However, there are some tricky aspects when it comes to doing things yourself. You don’t necessarily need to be a pro to install replacement doors, but the last thing you want is to pick out the perfect door, only to have it not fit.

Get the right fit right from the beginning with this measuring for replacement doors step-by-step guide.

Measuring for Replacement Doors: Gather Supplies

Having everything you need handy will save you time and keep you safe. Besides a tape measure, you will need something to write the measurements down on and a step stool or small ladder.

Determine Door Width

The best way to go about getting the door width size is to take three measurements – once at the top of the door frame, in the middle, and then at the bottom of the door. Whichever measures the widest is the one you will want to choose. This is to ensure the door fits in every part of the space.

Check the Height

Place the hook of the tape measure on the top of the door and slide it down to the bottom of the door. The same idea for the width also applies to finding the best height but you can probably get away with two good measurements. The longest measurement is the one you should choose for your door.

Establish the Thickness

To determine how thick the door is, open the door and hook the tape measure to gauge the thickness. Also, measure the hinge side of the door by wrapping the hook on the inside while the door is open.

Measure the Door Frame

Getting the right fit for your replacement door means getting an accurate door size and also measuring the door frame where it will be installed. This will help make sure everything is aligned and sized appropriately. Follow the same steps for measuring the width and height of the door frame as you did the door itself.
